La Chartreuse d’Oujon, located at an altitude of 1,000 metres in a forest near Arzier, is the oldest building of the order (1146-1537) still standing in Switzerland. It was closed down during the Reformation and fell into ruin. The importance of the Chartreuse was ignored until archaeological excavations began on the site, from 1973 to 1995. These excavations revealed exceptional finds. Of particular interest was this complete monastic establishment which, although forlorn and forgotten, had survived intact in its medieval state.
