Since 1872 the Kunsthalle has been supporting the avante-garde in art and its exhibitions, which are well advertised in Basel, have featured many of the leading artists of classical modern and abstract expressionism, before they became known to the wider public. It achieves its aims not only through exhibitions, but also arranges lectures, performances, videos and films. The Kunstalle was completely renovated and modernized in 2004 under a project supervised by architects Miller & Maranta. The building also houses the Architectural Museum (see separate entry) and the Stadt Kino (City Cinema), which has its own independent programme of art related films.
