Located in Windisch, approximately 8.5 km west of Baden, the Königsfelden Convent was close to the Habsburg family’s original fortress. The convent was founded in 1308 by Elisabeth, widow of the German King Albert I, on the spot where he was murdered by Duke John of Swabia. In 1528, in the wake of the Reformation, the convent was secularized and in the 19th century converted into a mental hospital. In the church, which was restored in 1983-86, a black marble cenotaph in the central aisle marks the Habsburg’s family tomb from around 1320. The choir has eleven magnificent 14th century stained glass windows.
