Kleine Schanze, meaning ‘Little Redoubt’, is a lovely small park which was once the site of ancient fortifications; it is close to the Houses of Parliament and adjacent to the Federal Department of Finance. A popular vantage point, with an orientation table, it has great views of the mountains. There is a monument to the pioneer aviator, Oskar Bider (1891-1919), who, in 1913, made the first flight over the Alps, and an interesting 1909 monument, commemorating the foundation of the Universal Postal Union. The park also has a duck pond and the Park Café restaurant/café, which stages the popular ‘Party in the Park’.
