The Kirchenfeld Bridge is one of Berne’s most important bridges over the River Aare and connects the south side of the city with the Kirchenfeld residential area. Built in 1882-83, the twin arched iron road bridge leads directly into the large square of Helvetiaplatz, which is surrounded by a number of museums and has the Telegraph Union Monument (see separate entry) as its central feature. It is 229 metres (751 feet) long (between abutments), 39 metres (212 feet) high and has two 86-metre span arches. The concrete cladding to the columns was carried out when the bridge was reinforced in 1913.
