In a city of famous fountains, the Justice Fountain by the legendary Swiss Renaissance sculptor Hans Gieng, first referred to in 1525 and died in 1562, is arguably the finest. Erected in 1543, the statue is a copy of the original destroyed by vandals in 1986. The fountain has an octagonal basin and two overspill basins and Lady Justice is portrayed in counterpoise, blindfolded, sword of justice in her right hand and scales of justice in her left. Clad in gold armour, at her feet are four small busts of a pope, an emperor, a sultan and schultheiss (mayor).
