Tombstones from the 13th and 14th centuries in the courtyard of the Jewish Museum are evidence of the long history of Judaism in Basel. The museum exhibits are arranged in groups, relating to Jewish Law, the Jewish Year, Jewish everyday life and Jewish history; the latest gallery is dedicated to Jewish weddings. The highlights include Hebrew prints, which illustrate the importance of Basel as a centre of book printing from the 16th to the 19th century, and silver objects, Documents relating to World War II and from the first Zionistic Congress, held in the city in 1897, are also on display.
