The Ittingen Museum gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the lifestyle of the Carthusian monks, who inhabited the well preserved Charterhouse from 1461-1848. A highlight is the richly decorated baroque church, with its intricately carved stalls and high altar depicting St Bruno, founder of the order. The monk’s cells, in which they took all their meals alone except for lunch on Sunday, brings realisation of the austerity of their life, with its vow of silence and a routine that only permitted a maximum of 4.5 hours sleep at a time. A number of themed guided tours are available.
