The Piazza Indipendenza derives its name from the obelisk erected in the centre of the square in 1903. It commemorates the centenary of the 1803 Act of Mediation, whereby Napoleon secured the independence of the Ticino canton; the obelisk depicts scenes of the independence struggle. The square had previously been known as the Piazza San Rocco, after the church on its east side (see separate entry). Historically the square marked the south entrance to the medieval town and a column from the later neo-classical archway, built in 1860, can be seen on the left at the junction with the via Camminata.
