The market town of Ilanz is in the Vorderrhein valley some 11 km southwest of Flims. It is the nearest town to the Weisse Arena ski resort, whilst just downriver is the Swiss Grand Canyon gorge, with sheer white 300 metre high cliffs. The town has a population of around 2,500 and dates back to 765; in 1395, it became the centre of the ‘Grey League’ which played an important part in the foundation of the canton of Graubunden. The cobbled street old town has charm and the local museum is of interest. Canoeing, kayaking and river rafting are local sports.
