The village of Hospental, located at the junction of the Furka Pass and Gotthard roads, lies approximately 3 km southwest of Andermatt. At an altitude of 1,493 metres, it was first documented as Hospenthal in 1285. Dominant features are the 13th century square watch tower, which originally had external covered platforms, and the Catholic Church of Maria Himmelfahrt, designed by Bartholomaus Schmid and built between 1705 and 1711. Another historic highlight is the restored 17th century Haus Müller, with its red exterior and green-painted windows; it has family portraits by Lorenz Justin Ritz (1796-1870), Felix Maria Diogg (1762-1834) and Adolfo Müller-Ury (1862-1947).
