The polychrome Holbein Fountain used to stand in front of the Spalen Gate (see separate entry), but was moved in 1839 to its present location, at the junction of Spalenvorstadt and Schuetzenmattstrasse; the octagonal base was added at that time. One of Switzerland’s most beautiful Renaissance fountains, it features dancing peasants on its column with a figure playing the bagpipes at the top. The peasants are based on a drawing by Hans Holbein and the bagpipe player on an engraving by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). The original of the column is in the Basel History Museum.
