Housed in a 1984 building by the Neuchâtel architect, André Lambert, and influenced by the design of historic castles, the History Museum is said to be the second most important in Switzerland. It has a collection of more than 250,000 items, which unfold the history of Berne from prehistory to the present. Its most famed exhibits are the Graechwil Hydria, a Greek bronze vessel from 600BC, the Burgundian tapestries dating from 1440–1515 and the Königsfeld diptych, a masterpiece of 13th century Venetian craftsmanship. The building also houses the Einstein Museum (see separate entry) and the restored Bistro Steinhalle cafe/restaurant.
