Located in a converted building in the Dreispitz industrial area on the southern outskirts of Basel, the Herzog Foundation’s ‘Laboratory for Photography’ has one of the world’s largest collections of photographs comprising more than 300,000 items. The collection has been on display since 2002 in a warehouse converted by the renowned architectural practice of Herzog & de Meuron. Accumulated over 30 years, the photographs document the history of photography and industrial society since 1839. There is also a reference library with around 700 books on photographic history, together with rooms for study, teaching and research purposes.
