The Haus zur Mücke in Schlüsselberg is a magnificent building with a fascinating history. The first record of the building dates back to 1348 as a tavern for the upper classes. The conclave of the Basel Council met in the building in 1439. It was later rebuilt in 1545 as the Basel textile and corn house. Alterations took place in 1769, and in 1862 an extra storey was added. The Amerbach Cabinet, which is the heart of the Kunstmuseum collection, was housed here from 1671-1849; it was the first public museum in Basel and also served as the University Library.
