Created in 1989, and located in Aeshenplatz, is a monumental kinetic sculpture ‘The Hammering Man’ by American sculptor Jonathan Borofsky (b.1942). It celebrates the worker and is intended as a symbol ‘for all of us who are working together to make our environment on this planet safe and worth living in’. The sculpture swings his hammer in the rhythm of a man breathing and the same sculpture, in various sizes, has been erected in a number of cities around the world. This hammering man is 13.5 metres tall, 15 centimetres thick and weighs approximately 8 tonnes.
