Haldenstein village is located at an altitude of 528 metres on the west bank of the Rhine, around 4 km north of Chur; it has a population of approximately 1,000. First documented in 1129 as Lanze, it has received great publicity from the 2009 award of the prestigious Pritzker Prize for architecture to Peter Zumthor (b 1943). The Swiss architect and author has his studio in Haldenstein and is well known for his design of the Thermal Baths at Vals. The ruins of the Haldenstein Fortress and Schloss Haldenstein, which stages opera and concerts, are both listed Swiss Heritage sites.
