The Gutenberg Museum is named after the inventor of movable type printing, Johann Gensfleisch zum Gutenberg (1400-1468), and was opened in 2000. Founded in 1900 and previously located in Berne, it is now housed in a restored granary built in 1527 and has more than 1,000 square metres of exhibition space. Its aim is to make printing and communication understandable to visitors, and the development of words, language, signs and script is presented in an interesting multi-media show. The permanent exhibition illustrates printing history with machines from various periods attended by life-size wax figures. There are also subject-related temporary exhibitions.
