Gurten Park, located approximately 4 km south of Berne, was opened in 1999 and is an extremely popular recreation area with a wide range of attractions. The hill is 864 metres (2830 feet) above sea level and offers breathtaking views of the Berne, the Jura Mountains and the Alps, particularly from the wooden look-out tower. The Gurtenbahn red funicular takes you on a five minute panoramic ride to the upper station Gurten-Kulm. This is a great place to picnic or use the barbecue areas, but there are also restaurants. Apart from hiking, other facilities include a children’s playground and miniature railway.
