The lovely village of Göschenen is located at an altitude of 930 metres, close to the village of Wassen and approximately 6 km north of Andermatt. First mentioned in 1280 as Geschenden, it lies near the northern entrance to the 15 km long St Gotthard tunnel, built in the period 1872-1879. The Swiss engineer responsible, Louis Favre (1826-1879), died in the tunnel shortly before its completion and is buried in the local churchyard; a monument commemorates him. The surroundings are outstanding and the village has an attractive parish church built in 1900. Nearby is the Devil’s Bridge (see separate entry) in the Schöllenen Gorge.
