Gruyères Castle, built between 1270 and 1282, is one of the most famous, best preserved and photogenic castles in Switzerland. The home of the Counts of Gruyères until 1554, it was purchased by the Fribourg canton in 1938 and opened as a museum. Set in beautiful surroundings, the castle tour is a journey through 800 years of history, culture and architecture. There is a multi-media presentation and highlights include the Flemish tapestries, the room and paintings of French landscape artist Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875), the wood panelled Knights Hall, the heraldic stained glass, often with the crane (grue) symbol, and the formal garden.
