Grosse Schanze is now a park, but was formerly the principal portion of the city fortifications, which were built in 1634 and demolished in 1834. The park, which can also be reached from the main railway station by lift or by steps, has University of Berne buildings to the northwest. The Exact Sciences building has a terrace in front named in honour of the German born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955). The park is an outstanding viewpoint and in season has an open-air cinema, with a month long festival of films, varying from classics to latest releases.
