Located at about 2,100 metres above sea level, approximately 11 km south of Andermatt, is the interesting National St Gotthard Museum. Housed in an 1834 building which used to be a customs house and a rest stop, the museum covers the history of the route, its development and its traffic. It details the story of the 15 km rail tunnel opened in 1882 with the loss of about 200 lives, the 17 km motorway tunnel opened in 1980, and much more. There is a slide show every hour and the museum is open from May to October.
