Located at Dornach, approximately 11 km south of Basel, the Goetheaneum is the world centre for the anthroposophical movement. Named after the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), the centre was built in the period 1925-1928 and designed by the Austrian Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925); it replaced the first Goetheaneum, destroyed by fire on New Year’s Eve 1922/23. It is a pioneering example of exposed concrete construction in architecture and has protected status as a Swiss national monument. The centre has a 1,000-seat auditorium, a library and administrative offices; research and educational facilities are housed nearby. Several tours are offered daily.
