Glarus is the smallest capital of a canton in Swizerland with a population of around 6,000; at an altitude of 481 metres it lies at the foot of the Glärnisch which peaks at over 2,300 metres above sea level. First documented in 1178, few old buildings remain as the town was devastated by fire and rebuilt in 1861. The twin-towered neo-Romanesque protestant church is one of the city landmarks and has a fine treasury. A 1570 map by Ägidus Tschudi in the cantonal library gives an idea of the old town and there is a natural history museum at Zaunplatz 4.
