The Glarus Kunsthaus has gained a reputation for its exhibitions of contemporary art. It was opened in 1952 and is housed in a building by the local architect Hans Leuzinger (1887-1971), which is regarded as one of the best of its type in Switzerland. As well as its temporary exhibitions, the gallery exhibits works from its own collection of 19th and 20th century Swiss artists. The collection, which started in 1870, includes artists such as Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) and Fritz Pauli (1891-1968) amongst others. The exhibition area is some 800 mē and there is a cafeteria.
