Located 5.5 km southwest of Brienz by road, the Giessbach Falls, descending over 14 steps and discharging into Lake Brienz, are regarded as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Switzerland. There is a landing stage at the lakeside and an historic funicular leads up to the Grandhotel Giessbach. Built in 1873/74 like a fairy tale castle, the hotel is a Belle Époque treasure; it fell into disrepair but was restored to its original glory and reopened in 1984. In 2001 Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic series ‘Band of Brothers’ was filmed on location here.
