The Fribourg Funicular linking Saint Pierre (town centre) with Neuville (Basse-Ville) was opened in 1899 and is a historical monument. The only water counter balancing funicular left in Europe, it utilises the town’s waste water. It takes only two minutes to travel from history to present day, along a track length of 121 metres (400 feet), with a height difference 58 metres (190 feet). The gradient varies from 49.5 % to 55% and there are two cabins each taking 20 passengers. So far all attempts to modernise have been resisted and it remains as it was more than a century ago!
