A Bad Ragaz landmark, the remains of Freudenberg Castle are located about one km northwest of the town on an 84-metre-high hill. The castle was captured, plundered and razed to the ground by Confederates in 1437. The ruins passed into the hands of the state and were sold to the Pfäfers monastery in 1825; the state regained control when the monastery was abolished in 1838. The keep was restored in 1929. There is a legend that a beautiful girl was held captive and languished in the castle because no rescuer could fulfil the impossible conditions for her release.
