Located adjacent to the Kornhaus (see separate entry), the Romanesque French church is the oldest in Berne, having been built between 1270 and 1285. Originally the church of a Dominican monastery founded in 1269, it became a place of worship for Berne’s French speaking protestants in 1623 and from 1685-1851 a centre for refugee Huguenots fleeing from persecution in France. The interior has been extensively renovated, but retains two notable features, the choir stalls from 1302 and the exceptional frescoed rood screen with Dominican themes from 1495. The west front and facade of the southern aisles date from 1753-54.
