Freie Strasse runs from Basle‘s Marktplatz southeast to Sankt Alban-Graben; it is the main shopping street with some 150 retailers. It also has some interesting buildings, starting with the 1578 Renaissance Geltenzunfthaus at the corner with Marktplatz. Located at number 25 is the guild-house of the locksmiths, which dates back to 1306 and was beautifully decorated in 1733 in typical Baroque style; it now houses the popular Schlüsselzunft restaurant. Further on, at number 34, is the Hausgenossen guild-house which has striking wall paintings.
