Frauenfeld Castle was built by the Kyburger dynasty, who founded the town, and, with its imposing tower and outstanding view, is an attraction even from the outside. It now houses the Thurgau Cantonal History Museum (see separate entry). The massive tower dates back to around 1227 and the great hall is also from the 13th century; the residential building is 15th century and the administration building dates from 1834. The castle served as an administration centre until the Canton of Thurgau was established in 1803.
