The former Augustinian Monastery in Fribourg dates from the mid 13th century and is considered an important example of mendicant order architecture. The monasteries filled an important role in the history and cultural heritage of Fribourg, in particular the Jesuits who founded the College of Saint Michael, forerunner of the University. The church, dedicated to St Mauritius, has an important 16th century Mannerist altarpiece and 1896 stained-glass windows by Aloys Balmer. The monastery buildings now house the Cantonal Archives with more than 30,000 parchment documents dating back to 928.
