Flüelen, with a population of around 2,000, is located at the southern end of the Urnersee Lake, some 3 km northwest of Altdorf. First documented in 1266, it is today a holiday resort and harbour. Behind the 1665 parish church of St George and St Niklaus is Flüelen’s landmark, the tiny 13th century Rudenz Castle, a heavily-fortified tower which once belonged to the lords of Attinghausen who controlled a customs station. The ‘Schwurhände’ metal sculpture here was made for the 1964 Swiss National Exhibition by the Swiss painter and sculptor Werner Witschi (1906-1999). There is a cableway up the Eggeberge (1,440 metres).
