The Fine Arts Museum (Kunstmuseum) is Switzerland’s oldest art museum; it has an international reputation and a collection of works covering eight centuries. The National Art Collection was founded in 1809 and the museum building was opened in 1879 and extended in 1935. The collection contains more than 3,000 paintings and sculptures and, in addition, some 48,000 drawings, prints, photographs, videos and films. There are works by Salvador Dali (1904-1989), Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and many others, including a notable collection by Paul Klee (1879-1940). The collection is constantly growing.
