The village of Filzbach, located some 14 km northeast of Glarus, is at an altitude of 720 metres; it overlooks Lake Walen and is below the 2,442 metre-high Mürtschenstock. First documented in 1394 as Vilentzspach, it is a health resort, well known for the Sportzentrum Kerenzerberg (see separate entry). Habergschwänd Alp at 1,280 metres, offering splendid views and a restaurant, can be reached from Filzbach by chairlift in about 14 minutes. The 1,100 metre Talalpsee, a walk of some 1.25 hours south, is another attraction. The road to Obstalden passes the Sallerntobel gorge and offers more great views.
