The Ethnology Museum, the most important of its type in Switzerland, has, with some 300,000 items (excluding photographs), one of the largest collections in Europe on European and non-European cultural life. There are collections on America, Africa, Europe, Oceana, Southeast Asia and South, Central and East Asia. Those on the South Seas, Ancient America, Tibet and Bali are internationally famous. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the museum has supplemented its collection by its own expeditions. Exhibitions and a full programme of events are organised to make the treasures accessible and the museum’s work known to a wide public.
