The Espace Jean Tinguely-Niki de Saint Phalle, in a former tramway depot between the Notre Dame basilica and the Cordeliers church, is devoted to the work of two great artists of the 20th century. Jean Tinguely (1925-1991), the painter and sculptor, was born in Fribourg and is famous for his kinetic art. His monumental work ‘L’Retable de l’Abondance Occidentale et du Mercantilisme Totalitaire’ occupies centre stage and is a summary of his philosophy. His wife Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was a French sculptor, painter and film maker and they collaborated to create the Stravinsky Fountain near the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
