Engelberg has a population of around 4,000 and is located approximately 33 km southeast of Lucerne; it is the leading mountain resort of Central Switzerland. It is not only a winter ski resort (see separate entry) but has much to offer the visitor in summer. In addition to the attractions separately listed, there are many different mountain cableways to enjoy and over 360 km of hiking trails, including the four-lake hike and the Brunni trail, amongst others. Mountain biking is another attraction for many, as is Nordic walking and Engelberg’s five fixed rope routes are also well known to climbing fans.
