The Romantic poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850) wrote a poem about Engelberg Abbey entitled ‘Engelberg, the Hill of Angels’ and the huge Benedictine abbey dominates the mountain resort of Engelberg. Founded in 1120 by Konrad von Sellenburen, legend has it that the town’s name meaning ‘The Mountain of Angels’ results from the singing of angels heard by the founder. The church, undergoing renovation at present, is awe-inspiring and contains Switzerland’s largest organ with 1,737 stops. The Monastery library still contains the compete works of Martin Luther, but was pillaged by the French in 1798.
