The Emanuel Hoffman Foundation was established in 1933 by Maja Hoffmann-Stehlin, (later Maja Sacher) (1898-1989), to continue the commitment to contemporary art which she and her husband had begun. In 1941, she put the entire collection on permanent loan to the Basel Museum of Fine Art (Kunstmuseum) and in 1980 she initiated the Museum of Contemporary Art (Gegenwartskunst). As the collection grew, it became necessary to establish a facility for the large number of paintings not on loan and the Schaulager (see separate entry) was built for this purpose. The collection owns the works of about 150 artists and stages special exhibitions.
