Located adjacent to the Basel Theatre, the Elisabethenkirche, built between 1857 and 1865, is Switzerland’s most important Neo-Gothic church; it is also the first entirely new Protestant church to be built in Basel after the Reformation. It was designed by Ferdinand Stadler (1813-70) and built under the direction of Christoph Riggenbach (1810-63) and Carl Wartner (1817-91); it replaced a chapel erected in 1516. The church was endowed by Christoph Merian (1800-56) and his wife Margaretha Merian-Burckhardt (1806-86).The roof gargoyles, gable relief, the pulpit and other sculptures are by Jacques-Ange Corbel and the stained glass windows by Heinrich and Christian Burkhardt.
