Originally known as the Brunnadern Estate, which included a 1735 Baroque country house, its name was changed to Elfenau in 1816 after the property was acquired in 1814 by Russian émigré Grand Duchess Anna Feodorowna (1781-1860). Inspired by the great English gardeners, she reshaped the landscape and developed the grounds. In 1916 the estate was acquired by the Berne City Council and the Municipal Nursery was established. The area was declared a nature reserve in 1936 and is a popular recreational spot. During the summer, the estate’s cultural traditions are continued by the staging of exhibitions and other events.
