The great physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955) lived in the second floor flat of this building from 1903-1905, with his wife Mileva and their son Hans Albert. It is located just 200 metres below the famous Clock Tower (see separate entry) and it was here that he developed two of his greatest theories. These were his Quantum Light Theory, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1921, and the Theory of Special Relativity. The apartment has been owned by the Albert Einstein Society since 1977 when it became a museum, with the original furniture restored and documents and photographs displayed.
