Einsiedeln is a conveniently located town of some 13,500 inhabitants about 37 km from Zürich and 51 km from Lucerne. Whilst it is most famous for its Abbey, one of Switzerland’s most important places of pilgrimage, it has other attractive buildings such as the town hall. Proximity to Sihlsee, a popular recreational area and Switzerland’s largest artificial lake, is another attraction. Lesser known, but worth visiting, are the nostalgic shop and Gingerbread Museum at Kronenstrasse 1, which was completely renovated in 1997 and the Gangulf Chapel on the St James’ Way dating from 1030.
