With its Lady Chapel and Library (see separate entries), the 18th century baroque Benedictine Abbey is the great attraction of Einsiedeln. In 835, St Meinrad became a hermit and others followed until they were gathered together in 934 and the monastery was founded; its church is dedicated to Our Lady of Hermits. The present church was built in the period 1740-50 and has outstanding frescos and stucco-works by the famous Asam brothers, Cosmas Damian (1686-1739) and Egid Quirin (1692-1750). Features also include the Christmas and the Last Supper dome, the octagonal dome over the Lady Chapel and much more.
