Echallens City Hall was constructed in 1781 to replace the original Town House, which had by then seen better days. It was erected by the bourgeoisie who had played an important role during the period when the bailiffs of Bern and Fribourg controlled the area. However, 17 years after it was finished, a revolution took place in Vaud and the bailiffs were thrown out. The original pediment of the building was then modified to include the revolutionary insignias. These signs celebrated the fact that the canton’s long-desired solidarity has been achieved at last.
