Donatyre, lying in the beautiful hills above Avenches, is a tiny picturesque hamlet. The quaint houses and wonderful views make the trip worthwhile, but the pride of place in the hamlet is the tiny Romanesque church. Built with stones taken from the Roman wall, the church is a mute, but fascinating, witness of the region’s past. It is Romanesque in style, with a horseshoe-shaped apse and a rampant arch. Dating from the 11th century, it is one of the jewels of the area and should not be missed.
