When visiting St Martin’s Church in Zillis (see separate entry) don’t miss the village of Donath, which is nearby at an altitude of 1,033 metres and approximately 35 km south of Chur. From Zillis, a winding road runs some 2 km southwest to Donath. Above the village lie the ruins of Fardün Castle, where a 15th century legend has it that, during a peasant uprising, the governor of the keep spat in the dinner of a peasant Johannes Calcar, who promptly suffocated him by thrusting is head in the bowl saying ‘You’ve salted the dish; now eat it!’ The impressive Piz Beverin (2,997 metres) is close by.
