Domat Ems, located on the south bank of the River Rhine 6.5 km west of Chur, has a population of approximately 7,000. First documented in 765, it has a number of interesting features. The St John the Baptist parish church, rebuilt in late gothic style early in the 16th century, is a Swiss listed heritage site; it has a guard tower and attractive altar carvings. St Peter’s chapel, also a heritage site, was built around 800 in Carolingian style. The two metre high 1915 Dreibündenstein at 2,160 metres marks the Three Leagues border and can be reached by chair lift.
